José Mª Garat, MD
Born in Rosario (Uruguay).
Lives in Spain (Barcelona) since 1974.
Nationality: Uruguayan and Spanish.
After graduating with a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the School
of Medicine of the University of the Republic of Uruguay, he completed
his specialist training in Urology at the same University. He moved
to Barcelona, Spain to work at the Urology Department of Fundació Puigvert where
in 1977 he became Head of the Pediatric Urology Division, a position that he held until
2013. Between 1996 and 2000 he was also the Coordinator of the Uropediatric Group
of the Spanish Urologic Association.
His main interests are clinical research, treatment and surgical approach of bladder
exstrophy, hypospadias and spina bifida in children. To strengthen and deepen his
knowledge, he completed several training stays abroad. Among them at Hospital Saint
Joseph, Paris with Jean Cendron and at the Children’s Hospital, Philadelphia with John
Duckett focusing on the surgical approach of hypospadias treatment. He also had a stay
at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore with Robert Jeffs, pioneer in the staged
approach to surgical repair of bladder exstrophy.
Dr. Garat has developed his teaching career in the Faculty of Medicine of Montevideo,
the Fundació Puigvert and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He has participated
as professor in several scientificmeetings and has contributedwithmore than 500 papers
and videos. He has also been involved in the organization of 7 Internacional Courses
on Pediatric Urology in Spain and US and has published more than 200 scientific articles.
He co-authored in 1987 along with his colleague and friend, Dr. Rafael Gosálbez, the first
book on pediatric urology written in Spanish language.
Although retired from active medical practice, Dr. Garat remains actively involved
in academic practice, he is currently Advisor Professor at the Fundació Puigvert’s Urology
Department.
